Posing at Disneyland 1968

A family trip to Disneyland in 1968 featuring the family posing in front of many attractions. First up is the family in front of the Matterhorn with a lovely planter box. I distinctly remember these colorful planter boxes.

The family also posed at Sleeping Beauty Castle as well. Instead of posing at the front like so many other families, they posed off to the side and used one of the trees to help frame the photograph. I do miss the lush Disneyland of this time period.

Of course the family posed at the entrance to Tomorrowland in front of another colorful planter with the world on the move in the background.

The last family image is not posed but more of an action shot of the family walking down the steps of the Swiss Family Treehouse.

Denizens of The Jungle River Cruise

The Jungle River Cruise has been one of my favorite attractions for a long time. The theming of a mysterious trip through the jungles and rivers of the world highlighted by the scenes of animals has always intrigued me. And from the many photographs of the attraction, it has intrigued other guests as well. Three photographs that show off some of the animals seen on the attraction, a crocodile, several hippos and an elephant. Enjoy the dark moodiness of these jungle citizens in their natural habitat.

Painting the Matterhorn

...Sign that is. A great image inside the sign shop of an employee putting the shading on the mountain and finishing the sign for the Matterhorn attraction sign. Another sign sits next to the Matterhorn sign waiting to be finished.

Posing at the Plaza Inn

Every once in a while I find a Disneyland photograph at my local flea market in Denver. This is a nice image of the Plaza Inn with the family posing on a bench in front of the restaurant. I like the little girl wearing her mouse ears proudly.

Souvenir Friday- Welborn Tomorrowland Plate

Last weekend I was selling at an Old West show in Fort Worth, Texas. Before the show I managed to get out to a couple of antique malls in the area. As I was walking the rows filled with booths of antiques, collectibles and just junk I glanced into a booth and saw the plate. The price marked was very cheap so I immediately grabbed the plate and took it to the check out counter. At check out the price was even lower as the dealer was having a 50% off sale. I was very happy as I have not found a Welborn plate in a couple of years. This is one of the earlier plates with the ASI mark and the full Eleanore Welborn Art Productions mark on the back. ASI stands for the company set up to sell souvenirs at Disneyland, American Souvenir Incorporated.

Mother Murphy Meals All Hours

A nice photograph of the Mother Murphy Restaurant in the small mining town of Rainbow Ridge. The restaurant was found at the entrance to Nature's Wonderland Railroad and never served a meal. The restaurant did not survive the remodel for Big Thunder.

Ticket Booth Main Street Station

A close view of the ticket window at the Disneyland and Santa Fe Railroad Main Street Station. Note the prices are the same as the previous image of the Frontierland station. Also note the same ticket stamp for the back of the souvenir railroad tickets.

The Ticket Window At The Frontierland Train Station

A nice view of the actual ticket window located at the Frontierland Train Station. Lots of information is posted on signs and paintings in regards to the type of ticket and cost for a ticket.

Storybook Land Ticket Booth

Another ticket booth that is still in Disneyland is the neat lighthouse themed ticket booth for Storybook Land. Note the lovely Monstro is in the background waiting to swallow more boats. I like the two entrance signs in this image and I hope that one of these still exists.

Souvenir Friday- Listing of Special Events Nights At Disneyland 1964

This may be something totally obscure, but I think it is a great piece and presents some information not found elsewhere. The sheet is a memo listing the various special events nights at Disneyland in the first half of 1964. Some interesting nights including several conventions and youth events that helped to increase attendance. My favorite nights are when a company or organization would get the park for the night. Many times the attendance was less and the ability to ride all the rides was greater. Also listed are the four Grad Nites for 1964.

Alice In Wonderland Fantasyland Ticket Booth

A neat view of the mushroom shaped ticket booth used for Alice in Wonderland. The poster is nice sitting on top of the building. Note the yellow Keppy Kap on the little girl in line. Also the entrance sign on the flag is great. I am happy that this structure is still in use today.

A closer view of yesterday's image showing the Fantasyland Depot ticket booth. The sign listing the prices for admission is nice, I wonder if any of these signs have survived. Note the telephone sitting in the booth.

Fantasyland Depot, Disneyland and Santa Fe Railroad

A very rare view of the Fantasyland Depot for the Disneyland and Santa Fe Railroad. The station was removed in 1965 for it's a small world. The checkerboard pattern continues the Medeavil Faire theming to Fantasyland. The admission price sign is nice, but the crowning piece are the two lamp post signs for the opening of the Columbia.

Mine Train Ticket Booth

Two boring but really obscure images of the Mine Train Ticket booth in Frontierland. I believe the focus was the notice painted on the window featuring the cost for tickets. I do like that a cast member is visible working in the booth. I hope Disneyland engineering was able to fit the booth with an air conditioner.

Souvenir Friday- Tencenniel Program

Let's go back 50 years to when Disneyland was only 10 years old, to the birthday celebration known as Tencenniel. The press were invited to an event at the new Plaza Inn featuring a nice lunch and a presentation on the new attraction Great Moment's With Mr. Lincoln. The Tencenniel was the first Disneyland anniversary that featured a large push including specific merchandise and several events.

Mike Fink's Landing

One of my favorite signs in the collection is this image of the Mike Fink Keel Boat landing sign. The sign features stills from the TV show featuring Mike Fink and Davey Crockett. The signboard includes a map of the route of the Keel Boat on the Rivers of America as well as a board for arrivals and departures. Enjoy this rare view of a unique sign board.

Frontierland Ticket Office Sign

A nice view of the Frontierland Ticket Booth listing the prices for the various attractions of the Rainbow Desert. Note that a majority of the Frontierland Rainbow Ridge attractions closed at dusk. I think riding on the Mine Train after dusk would have been a spectacular ride. Note that kids are 15 cents cheaper than adults.

A follow up picture to the May 7th post showing the entrance to the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction. This image is a close up view of the circular sign for the price of admission. Note the riveted detailing of the wall and unfortunately the bin filled with cigarette butts.

Detail of the Tomorrowland Ticket Booth Signs

I posted images of the Tomorrowland Ticket Booth, but just noticed this shot. The image is a close up of the sign on top of the booth. What is great is that the little weather vane like sculpture is captured as well as some of the great Tomorrowland lights. Also note the atomic symbols on the sign.

Souvenir Friday- Adventureland Picture Gun

One of two variations of packaging for this great and fun toy from the 1950s. The Adventureland Picture Gun features some entertaining images from the jungle and is filled with various wild animal images. This toy was sold not only at Disneyland but also was available at five and dime stores throughout the United States. The other variation is a green box that is more of a closed box. I believe the yellow one is the first version. A fun toy in a fun package.

Jungle Cruise Ticket Booth- 50 Cents or One D Coupon

For Amazon Belle, the Jungle Cruise Ticket Booth. Cost for the ride in May of 1959 was 50 cents or one D Coupon (the highest coupon in the ticket booth at the time.) The theming fits the Adventureland setting with pole construction featuring aged wood and whitewashed window frames. An interesting note is that the ticket seller is female, even though they could not operate a Jungle Cruise boat. Since Amazon Belle was so excited (just like a kid the night before a Disneyland visit), I have posted both images. And to answer a question from Major Pepperidge, I believe the images were photographed by a member of the sign shop to document their work.

The Back Side of the Fantasyland Central Ticket Booth

A nice view of the lovely striped ticket booth that served as the Fantasyland Central Ticket Booth. Note that guided tours are prominently displayed. I also like the Please Use Other Window for Tickets sign. Looks like a busy day at the park.

1960s Batmobile on the Street

Interrupting my posts on Disneyland to showcase another cultural icon of the 1960s, the Batmobile from the television show. The car was created by George Barris and was a featured "character" in the show starring Adam West and Burt Ward. During the run of the Batman TV show, the car toured the United States appearing at various events and car shows. I recently found two snapshots of the Batmobile driving the streets of Denver. Unfortunately they are a little blurry, being shot by a person riding in a car, but they are still really cool. The first shot shows the car accelerating through an intersection.

The second shows the car driving on the street with another car behind them. I believe both of them have some sort of celebrity as a passenger.

1980s Disneyland Jungle Cruise T Shirt

Coming from the more modern part of my collection is this fun t shirt showing the Jungle Cruise. The graphic is fun and reminds me of the Art Corner postcards with the attraction and characters in a fun gag.

The Other Side of the Fantasyland Ticket Booth

A slightly different view of the Fantasyland ticket booth showing the final shield sign (this time for Guided Tours.) Also a slightly better view of the list of attractions and the ticket required. On the right hand side is a nicely painted trash can and in the background is the shield shaped sign featuring a bunch of grapes for the Welch juice bar.

Fantasyland Ticket Booth By The Carousel

A very small ticket booth that sat in Fantasyland by King Arthur's Carousel. The theming of the booth fits into the Medieval Faire look of early Fantasyland. The giant shield shaped signs that feature the ticket books are cool as are the giant signs featuring the ticket "value" and listing of rides. The booth also was a good place to park a stroller.

Yesterday there was a question on how the ride operator knew the guest was on a round trip. The guest would be given this large ticket to give to the ride operator.

Tomorrowland Skyway Ticket Booth

If you want a ride to Fantasyland, pull out your B coupon or one quarter. Or if you want a round trip, pull out 2 B tickets or you could pull out two quarters out of your pocket. I believe this price was per person, so a group ride would cost more than a solo ride. The ticket booth is not very themed or graphic as others, but still has nice lettering.

Space Station X-1 and the Space Man

The ticket booth for Space Station X-1 featuring admission for ten cents and one A Coupon. The great thing is that the Disneyland Space Man is taking a break reading some books in the ticket booth. I wonder if a guest came up to pay their dime, he would take the money or the A Coupon.
