World's Fair Wednesday- 1958 Brussels Atomium

A few images of the Atomium at the Brussels World's Fair. Viewing these images, I have decided to add a visit to the structure is on my bucket list. Make sure you wave to your friends.

I don't think I've ever paid attention to that support piece at the base of the structure (last photo). It looks like that zigzag pattern is an actual stairway. I know there were escalators inside the tubes for access to the top, so I'm guessing this is a fire escape?
