Marineland 1964

One of the less flashy amusement parks in the Los Angeles area was Marineland. The main attraction was shows featuring various sealife doing tricks and skits. The star whale would leap out of the tank.

The grounds were also nicely landscaped with pools for various animals including this pool with pink flamingos and puffins.

I guess that's a Pilot whale in the first two photos? Maybe Corky or Orky, or whatever their names were. Those teeth are impressive, it basically looks like a small monochromatic Killer Whale.

This is kinda cool. Go to Google Earth, search for Terranea Way, Rancho Palos Verdes and you get a view of the Terranea Resort that now sits where Marineland used to. Then roll back the image clock. You can see the old parking lot, these tanks and grandstand as late as 2006. I remember a Pilot Whale named Bubbles in the 60's.

Marineland had three pilot whales named Bubbles, the last one was captured in 1966 and lives to this day at SeaWorld San Diego, now around 53 years old.


Orky and Corky were killer whales, and Corky also lives at SeaWorld San Diego, around 52 years old. Orky died in the late 80s, but his two daughters are still alive.

The whale in the picture however is a false killer whale.
