Disneylander First Issue January 1957

In response to a request from Jason at Disneyland Nomenclature, I am posting several of my Disneylander magazines. Disneylander was the first cast member magazine and was published by the Disneyland Recreation Club and featured many articles on the various cast members and also events. In later years there was a series of issues that spotlighted the various lessee companies. This is the first issue which does not have a volume or number. I like the early kind of crudeness for this issue with the ads being hand drawn and the typography being type from a typewriter. Still some nice information on George Whitney who was the ride consultant and also a nice New Years greeting from Fred Schumacher who was the General Services Director. Enjoy reading this magazine.

Very neat, I don't think I've ever seen the first issue (even in photos) before. Note that on page 6, Don Novis (of the original Golden Horseshoe show) is renting an apartment for $40. He also sang some songs in "Bambi", by the way!

I was interested in Fred Schumacher's "New Year's Message" too (I have one of his ID cards)... it's not quite the "rah rah" statement I might expect from a Disney publication.

Thank you, Patrick! I don't believe I'd ever seen a photo of George Whitney before. The photo of Fred Schumacher is great, too. And as Major pointed out, for $40 you could share an apartment in Balboa with Donald Novis?! I need to find out more about Dr. Krick, the weather consultant...

Page 8 does seem to indicate that there was some publication before this ("The Staff of your Disneylander would like to thank all of you for the many compliments you have made on the recent publication and for the suggestions for future editions.").

Really enjoyed this item. Did you catch the little blurb about Ron Dominguez at the end of the Personal Glimpses section? - “what next will this versatile Disneylander undertake?”
