A Lovely Maiden Amongst the Flowers

A long time ago there used to be a very beautiful and restful spot on Main Street. It was filled with flowers and color. It was a great place to pose and have your picture taken. Now the flowers did not have much of a scent as they were fake flowers, but the color was right. The Disneyland Flower Market was the scene for many photographs. This one is from the early 1970s and shows a lovely miss posing. The belt really is interesting.

Strike a Pose in New Orleans Square

When New Orleans Square opened in 1967 the little courtyard in the back was filled with colorful statues and fake flowers. The statues always remind me of Old Town in San Diego with the restaurants there having the same statues in place. This spot is now where the portrait artists set up and is devoid of much decoration.

Souvenir Friday- Disneyland Hotel Check In Magazine Plus Extra

Once upon a time if you stayed at the Disneyland Hotel you received a nice magazine filled with local information and ads. This copy is from January Febraury 1971 and features a stylish couple sitting in the opulent lobby. The Hotel at the time was definitely a first class hotel with lots of amenities.

As an added extra bonus, Don from Magicalhotel.com sent me these images of the Mini golf course.

Disneyland Hotel Rooms 1976

Three views of the Hotel dated 1976. The first shows the completed Sierra Towers in its classic glory and before all the additions.

The second shows an interior image of one of the rooms in the tower.

The final image is of the newly remodeled Garden Room.

Makes you want to stay there for a couple of nights and get in early to Disneyland.

Construction At the Disneyland Hotel

The Disneyland Hotel was operated under the same pretense as Disneyland...it would never be complete. These two shots show some of the construction that took place at the Hotel in the 1960's. The first shows construction of the fantastic miniature golf course with the Peter Pan themed hole in the foreground and the Matterhorn themed hole in the background. I wonder what happened to the Mr. Smee and Crocodile when the mini golf course was removed?

Here is a close up of the smaller version of the TWA Rocket. Too bad it is slightly obscured by the tree.

The next shot is of construction of one of the Hotel towers. I believe this is the Bonita tower which opened in 1961 in conjunction with the expanding of the Monorail track. The sign in front of the building is unreadable with the exception of Disneyland Hotel.

And thanks to anonymous for setting me straight, the Sierra Tower was constructed first and then the Bonita Tower came later.

Inside the Disneyland Hotel Gourmet Restaurant Cocktail Lounge

The last post from yesterday featured the signage and entrance to the cocktail lounge at the Gourmet Restaurant at the Disneyland Hotel. Let's go inside to see the interior. The photographs came from an estate of a Budweiser sales man and I assume the Disneyland Hotel was one of his stops. The first two shots show patrons drinking Budweiser at the lounge tables. The interior was themed to a British Man's club or even a dark pub with leather chairs, wooden walls and pub signs.

The next two photos show one of the bars. Note the powder hunting horn used as a beer pull. And also check out the great 1950s modern illustration mural in the background.

Two Views of the Disneyland Hotel Arcade Sign

Two views of the signs along the Disneyland Hotel arcade. The first shows the sleek Monorail in station with the airline reservation offices underneath. The Volkswagon Van is marked for the Disneyland Hotel on the back. Must have been the van used to tranpsort hotel guests and their luggage. The second image is of the Disneyland Hotel Restauarant sign. The restaurant's were originally run by Gourmet who also had restaurants in Beverly Hills and other hotels.

Aiprlane View of the Disneyland Hotel

Photograph taken out of an airplane circling over the Disneyland Hotel in late 1955. The Hotel has guests and more buildings appear to be in the midst of construction. In the lower right hand corner is the Richfield Service Station and in the upper left can be seen the Disneyland parking lot (dirt) with busses and cars parked and the very edge of the berm and a structure which may be the Frontierland Railroad Station (tough to tell.)

Disneyland Hotel Under Construction 1955

I was inspired by Daveland's set of Disneyland Hotel images to start a week of the Disneyland Hotel. The first photograph is of the shops and pool under construction in 1955. In the foreground are some remnants of the orange groves with houses still seen in the background. The iconic holey steel girders are up and the concrete is being poured. Stick around for more images of the Disneyland Hotel next week.

Souvenir Friday- Ford Times Article September 1961

From the Ford Times magazina, Disneyland- A Child's Garden of Fantasy by Art Linkletter and illustrated by Disney artist and imagineer Ralph Hullet. A nice description and anecdotes about Disneyland in 1961 by the host of House Party and author of Kid's Say the Darndest Things. Ford Times was a magazine you received a free subscription when purchasing your new Ford car or truck. This issue focused on tourist spots in the West, with Disneyland being one of the biggest. I have always wondered where the art to this articles is located, is it at Ford in their archives, Disney in the art morgue or waiting to be discovered?

Happy July Fourth Fireworks

A nice publicity image of the fireworks going off over Sleeping Beauty Castle. Nothing says the Fourth of July than exploding shells and the Oooh and Aaah of a crowd. Enjoy your Fourth of July and be safe!

Disneyland Exit

This is a companion shot to the entrance photos I showed a couple of days ago. This is the saddest location in Disneyland, because here you exit the worlds of fantasy, yesterday and tomorrow and head back to the world of today with all the stress and worry. It is a cheerful exit and the line up of posters on the fence is quite amazing.

Major- the majority of these shots are approximatley 1960 give or take a year.

Entrance to the Crystal Arcade

If you look closely, you can see the book display and some other merchandise on the inside of the Crystal Arcade shops.

The Old Entrance

Here are two nice views of the entrance to Disneyland. The first shows the old line of Ticket Booths where one would purchase your admission to Disneyland. The signs up on the booth with the ticket prices would be great to own.

The second image is the actual gate entrance with the great sweeping look and above each gate a letter spelling out Disneyland.

One of the only few successes of the new Disneyland Resort is that the entrance plaza seems more grand in a way and also capable of handling the large crowds. For E-Ticket Tim and all those other sign fanatics out there, here is a close up of the ticket prices sign:

River Boat Cargo

Some of the best theming at Disneyland is the boxes and other cargo that sits on the Mark Twain/Columbia dock ready for passage to other places. Now most of the cargo has an inside joke with the names of imagineers, hometowns and other such personal touches. However in the 1960's, the names and places were just jokes. Some of my favorite ones in the photos are Ezra Catch in Fishtown, USA, Tom Cat Pet shop, Sticky Glue Works in Tacky North Dakota and Rattle Snake Oil. In the first shot you can see the construction of New Orleans Square with the construction wall up.

Souvenir Friday- Coney Island Postcard plus a Mary Blair Piece

Today I thought I would show two recent purchases. The first is of the Bobsled ride at Coney Island. The postcard shows the front of this nice roller coaster ride located at Coney Island. The card has a Coney Island postmark for 1944 and written greetings Having a Big time here. Shore is a nice day.

One of the reasons I decided to post this image today is that I read an article yesterday that a large chunk of Coney had been purchased by a redeveloper and he was planning to revitalize Coney. One of the fears is that he wants to put housing on the land, leading many to believe that the nature of Coney will be lost and the amusements will eventually be gone. Although not the place it once was, Coney is still an amazing slice of life. With new activities such as the Mermaid Parade and the world famous Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest, the area has seen a resurgence of people and activities. Let's hope the redeveloper will do the right thing and restore Coney to an amusement location rather than a housing development.

The second image is a Little Golden Books advertising postcard from the Mary Blair book I Can Fly. I love the graphic of the girl on the swing. I found this at a postcard show and was thrilled to get it. I hoped for other cards, but the dealer only had this one.

Walt and Sharon Visit Owen Pope at the Pony Farm

A very nice image from 1957 showing Sharon and Walt Disney visiting Owen Pope at the Pony Farm backstage at Disneyland. Owen appears to be feeding one of the mules and in the background is one of the Conestoga Wagons with Oregon or Bust written on the canvas. A nice publicity shot I have not seen before.

Disneyland Schedule 1966

Located outside of the Main Street Police Station and City Hall was this sign featuring the entertainment schedule for Disneyland. It appears to be winter as most of the outdoo entertainment such as the gun fights, Nature's Wonderland Balladeers happen on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays.

Douglas Rocket to the Moon 1966

When TWA dropped sponsorship of the Rocket to the Moon ride, Disneyland found a new corporate sponsor in Douglas. Douglas was a name to be reckoned with in the Military Industrial Complex building many components and vehicles not only for space exploration, but also for combat. The rocket icon was painted and marked in Douglas colors and logo as well as new signage for the ride. The ride itself was a C ticket at the time which seems a little low as I always thought of the Rocket to the Moon during this time period as at least a D ticket ride. Douglas would continue to sponsor the ride, even after the 1967 reconstruction of Tomorrowland. Their name is on the cool 1967 Rocket to the Moon poster.

Skyway and Advertising Sign 1956

One of the neatest methods of advertising new attractions in the early days of Disneyland were giant billboard with great graphics. I have seen them for the Rainbow Caverns Mine Trains, Disneyland 1959, Nature's Wonderland Railroad, Flying Saucers and this nice one for the Skway to Tomorrowland. The photographer managed to squeeze most of everything into the image.

Black Bart at Rainbow Ridge

A nice image of the Frontierland villian Black Bart hamming it up at Rainbow Ridge. The people in the background in line do not seem very interested in the character and are not even facing them. The excitement of riding Nature's Wonderland Railroad is just overwhelming.

Souvenir Friday- Story of Walt Disney

This is a fairly recent addition to my collection. It is the Diane Disney Miller and Pete Martin book The Story of Walt Disney. The book was available through all bookstores throughout the world, but this one does have a Disneyland connection. When the book was published, the Disneyland Mail Order division convinced Diane and her Dad Walt Disney to sign copies of the book and make them available for sale. This is one of the books autographed by Walt and Diane and sold at Disneyland.

A friend of mine found this at an estate sale and then sold it to me.

Interior of Wurlitzer Music Shop

Where Dee Fisher played and made wonderful music, the Wurlitzer shop on Main Street in Disneyland. Not really a store where one could purchase a musical instrument, but rather a showcase where interested customers could look at the instruments and then their names and addresses would be taken down and sent to their hometown stores. A lot of the early lessee's worked the same way.

Pele in Enchanted Tiki Garden 1966

A nice image of Pele in her original colors. Now all those people who purchased the knock off version from Big Lots a couple of years ago can now paint their Pele in the appropriate colors.

North Pole Colorado Christmas In June

With the hot weather (almost 100 degrees here on Sunday) I thought I would cool off with two 1960 dated images of Colorado's Santa Claus themed land: The North Pole. Located on the slopes of Pikes Peak this park is still in existance and remains remarkably intact. Some of the rides seen in other Santa's Villages are still operating like the Christmas Tree ride, the frozen North Pole, and of course a visit to Santa.
