Marc Davis Pirates Part I

Quick post today featuring vintage publicity stills of Marc Davis drawings for Pirates of the Caribbean. The stills feature some tableaux I do not recognize seeing before. My favorite two are the large pirate and girl and the dog pulling on the pirate. Check tomorrow for another set of stills.

The scene on the top right plays out a little differently to a "modern" audience 50 years later. Clearly the young lady is begging the Pirate King to take her along, and clearly the answer is no...

Now how does Captain Ned tell the young lass that Cabin Boy Hodo looks after his every need, and "thar be no need o'wenches anbard the Raging Queen?"

This is what a lifetime of exposure to Saturday Night Live sketches will do to you.

I have a couple more interpretations, but since this is not Freudian Friday, it will have to wait.

"dog pulling on the pirate" Reminds me of the Coppertone ads! Katella, you crack me up!

Huh, don't recall seeing that 'dog pulling pirate', either. Where'd you come across these? They're unique.

That was wise of them to use a skilled animator to help design these characters. Nobody is simply sitting/standing there like a prop. Each character seems alive and definitely up to something.
