An Early Ride on Big Thunder
In 1979 the wildest ride in the west opened in Frontierland. Here is a publicity photograph showing the ride. Imagineer Tony Baxter was influenced by the towering spires of Bryce Canyon National Park. And coming full circle, the new Cars Land features similar towers and rock structures.

Wow, we were just in Disneyland yesterday and I was telling my wife that I remembered when Big Thunder opened--I could've sworn it was in the early '80s (I guessed '82-'83)! Hoo boy is my memory starting to fade. Thanks for sharing!
