New York World's Fair Part 5- End of the Line

The last set of the slides from the New York World's Fair of 1964. These were all taken at dusk so are slightly dark.

A cute couple shot with the Port Authority building in the background.

Two more shots of the fountain area of the pavilion.

I hope you all enjoyed this series.

New York World's Fair Part 5

Heading back to the New York World's Fair, some images taken at dusk. The first image shows the Transportation and Travel pavilion with the moon shaped roof.

The second image is a fountain close to a Greyhound information booth.

The last two images are of the Chrysler pavilion. The first shows the piggyback truck sculpture and one of the buildings designed to look like an internal combustion engine with the show being about an engine.

This image shows the cars as sculpture fountain surrounding the Chrysler exhibit. The trash can with the New York World's Fair logo is nice.

New York Worlds Fair Part 4

Back again with more views of the New York World's Fair. The first image ties into yesterdays, the Swiss Sky Ride building (one of two.)

Here is another photograph taken while on the Sky Ride. The image shows a food stand serving Shrimp Roll.

One of the more interesting modes of transportation was the Greyhound tram. The tram is designed maintaining the sleek lines of the futurism and aesthetics of the fair.

A nice you are there view while riding the Greyhound tram.

Next up are a couple of images showing the wide boulevards, the crowds and just how expansive the Fair was. By looking at the images, I can see the need for a tram on the fairgrounds.

The next two images are from dusk when the family was leaving. The first is of the New York Port Authority building where a heliport was located.

The second image is of the amusement area with the lights just starting on. Edit- I have since learned that this is the Chrysler Exhibit. Thanks PTA.

I hope everyone has a nice and happy Thanksgiving. And for the vegans out there, enjoy your tofurkey!

Aboard the Swiss Sky Ride- New York World's Fair 1964 #3

Today we will ride along with the photographer riding the Swiss Sky Ride. First lets see what type of bucket we will be riding.

The ride went over the International area and gave riders a panoramic view of the Fair. One of the pavilions seen is the one for China, well actually Taiwan Republic of China, not the People's Republic of China.

Continuing one can see the Pavilions for Sierra Leone and Africa.

The next photo shows the pavilions of Greece and the Philippines with Africa in the background.

The next image shows the Pavilion of Japan in the foreground with the Johnson Wax and Tower of Light.

The next image shows Africa with Malaysia in the background.

The next image shows the New England States and New York Pavilion with a hint of the Unisphere.

The last image is one of my favorites, the Caribbean Pavilion in the foreground and the Unisphere in the background.

I would like to acknowledge the assistance of the website NYWF64.com run by Bill Cotter for the assistance in locating the Pavilions. If I have missed any or misnamed any, please let me know. Some more long shots of the Fair tomorrow.

New York World's Fair Part 2

Back with more images from the Worlds Fair. The first image shows the Unisphere and the large fountains. I believe this was taken from the Greyhound tram ride. The tram ride would take a visitor through the entire fairgrounds.

The next shows the Telephone Pavilion sponsored by Bell. The architecture of this pavilion was very space age modern as it is a floating wing.

The next image is of the Mormon Church pavilion. The inspiration for the building is the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City Utah.

I will have to ask the experts to identify this building. It appears to be a large exhibit hall. I like the statue in front of the building. Sorry that the image is a little dark.

Tomorrow more 1964 New York World's Fair images.

New York World's Fair Part 1

I think I am going to spend a week exploring the New York Worlds Fair of 1964. All of these slides are in a funky plastic mount and are 16mm in size. The images are still pretty nicely done. The first shows the icon of the Fair- the Unisphere. It appears the Boy Scouts are worn out from exploring the Fair.

The next image is of the other soft drink pavilion, the Coca Cola World of Refreshment. I wonder if they wished they had worked with Walt Disney?

The Vatican actually sponsored a pavilion and I believe this is the main structure, a compact baroque Gothic church. Edit- experts in the New York World's Fair of 1964 have alerted me this is the Thailand Pavilion. Thanks guys!

Finally for all the monorail fans, a shot of the AMF monorail under the track.

Tomorrow more images from the '64 Fair.

Below Decks Columbia Part 4

The end of the images for the Columbia Below Decks. I believe the images were taken pre-opening by the shot of the cast members working to place the items and the shot of the work area with the boxes of glass cleaner. I hope you enjoyed this visit and that the next time you are at Disneyland, you step aboard and go below decks on the Columbia.

Columbia Below Decks Number 3

More images from the Below Decks exhibit. The images feature the working areas of the ship including the stacking of the hides, the ships carpenter and the rigging and the armory. The details that Emile Kuri was able to get into the area is pretty amazing, considering the amount of space used for the walkways. For all of those readers who have not gone below decks to visit the display...do so the next time you are at Disneyland.

Souvenir Friday- Tencenniel Sugar Packet Plus Columbia Below Decks Part 2

For today I am delivering a two for one. The first is a nice sugar packet from 1965. The Tencenniel celebration has always been a collecting topic of mine and this sugar packet is one of the most ephemeral pieces from that year.

Now for the second which is a continuation of exploring the Below Decks of the Columbia. The images show the details seen on the bunks and spaces of the crew members. Some very convincing details of shipboard life and the comforts and reminders of home.
