Large Format Photographs- Part 8 Columbia and South of the Border

The last image from this collection of large format photographs. I love the view from the tunnel on Nature's Wonderland.

The next four images are from South of the Border. Located near Dillon, South Carolina on I-95. The location in the 1950's. 1960's and 1970's was basically barren with no towns or stops. The owner had built a beer stand and received lumber marked to South of the North Carolina Border. This set off a lightbulb, and he created a roadside attraction themed to Mexico. Over the years, he built up the location and advertised the stop with hundreds of bill boards (most featuring Pedro and bad puns.) Now there is much more built up around the stop, but it still pulls in the tourists in need of gas, food and bathroom break. Here are some of my favorite images:

WOW, these large format photos just keep getting better! What an amazing shot, love the fort in the background!

Cool South of the Boarder shots! I see the Red Dog is still there, sweet! Almost bought a huge house in Dillon SC for $25K in the '80s, great part of the country. THANKS!

I'm so glad that South of the Border is still there, a classic roadside attraction if there ever was one. And that shot looking through the Nature's Wonderland tunnel is great! I'm picturing huge stacks of large format photos waiting to be scanned ( I hope )!

Love that first shot.

And South of the Border - what a treat. Have piles of old postcards but, judging by your new photos, it looks like the glory days are behind it. Hope it sticks around!

And I quote:
"You never sausage a biscuit!"
Although I haven't been past the place for many years, I'm not likely to forget it. I think I recall seeing their roadside advertising as far away as New Mexico.
