1973 It's A Small World

A selection of slides taken in 1973 showing the old It's A Small World prior to the pastelization and then whitewashing of the facade. It is interesting to note that the ride was loaded reverse to the loading method of now. I am sure this was done to funnel all the crowds through the Mattel store. The first slide is a little funky and I do not know why. I do enjoy the tie die pants on the lady in the foreground. Enjoy!

Those Tie-Dye pants are GREAT! I love the colors! The “funkiness” of this scan lends to the mood… For years I thought they actually moved the entire Small World ride, not just the cue lines! Thanks for these, I dig the really old slides, but I have a direct connection to these 1970's photos, I may have even been there that day. Wait, I’m looking for myself in the crowd.

There used to be a Mattel store?

That first photo looks like a Photoshop filter might have been used by accident. Maybe not!

There still *is* a Mattel store. Kind of. When Mattel began sponsorship of "it's a small world," they added the "it's a small world" Toy Shop. Neither one is currently sponsored by Mattel, but the Toy Shop is still there.

Oy, that store...I could NOT get my kids out of that store.

But, its ok, now 20 years later, last night i saw the Hot Wheels car we bought for my son in that shop. He has it a place of honor on his shelf.

I'm pretty sure the Barbie shoes are dispersed across the planet.
