A Trip to Disneyland in 1968

First image for today is a nice view of the Matterhorn mountain. The crowd is sparse but interesting. Note the souvenir stand in the background.

The second image shows a busy Main Street with the Railroad Station in the background. I love the fantastic balloon seller in the background with all the colorful balloons.

Souvenir Friday- Disneyland Employment Application

I picked up this nice piece of Disneyland ephemera at the last Disneyana Collector's Club show. I believe this application dates to either the late 1950s or early 1960s. This came from the large grouping of paperwork that was for Milt Albright. Milt was in group sales and created many programs that were beloved by guests including the Magic Kingdom Club, Grad Nite, Tour Guides and so much more. In looking at this application the one big thing that made me laugh was the statement at the end that the applicant was not a member of the communist party.

Andy Visits Disneyland Part 4

It is now time to say goodbye to Ms. Andy and her 1976 Disneyland visit. First up though is a correction, the Frontierland overview from yesterday now in the right orientation.

Now to today's photographs. First up is a view of a now extinct attraction, the friendly Indian Village on the banks of the Rivers of America. A nice view showing the old layout of the village. I like the mature trees surrounding the village.

The final image shows the Mark Twain getting ready to leave the dock. Just like the Mark Twain going on its journey, let's wish a bon voyage to the 1976 version of Andy.

Andy Visits Disneyland Part 3

Andy and her family have now made it to Frontierland. First up is a stunning view of the sailing ship Columbia floating by New Orlean's Square. This image has some great color and guests, my eye is drawn to the blonde lady walking on the Columbia and the group of Navy personnel on board.

The second image is from Tom Sawyer's Treehouse and shows the Rivers of America dock with a nice view of Frontierland with the Matterhorn mountain in the background. If you look closely, you can also see the Swiss Family Treehouse in the background.

Andy Visits Disneyland Part 2

The next slides from my friend Andy and her trip to Disneyland in 1976. First up is a shot from the Monorail station with the Submarine Voyage lagoon and the Matterhorn in the background. I like the kinetic motion of the Skyway passing overhead. Andy and her mom are waiting for a Monorail...I hope it is Monorail Blue.

The next image is of the home of the tuna burger, the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship. Another fantastic location filled with color and whimsy that is no longer in existence. Andy is waving from the poop deck...let's all wave back to her.

Andy Visits Disneyland Part 1

A friend of mine was going through her family collection of slides and came across a small group of slides from a Disneyland visit in 1976. The grouping included a nice group of souvenir slides and these nice personal slides. First up are two images of the Matterhorn mountain. Both are taken from the Railroad, the first from the area around it's a small world. Check out the Security Officer walking by and the fantastic light structure.

The second image is from the Tomorrowland Railroad Station. The colors of Tomorrowland mean tomorrow to me more so than the gold and metal colors of current Tomorrowland.

Three Views Around the Park (Part 3 of Group of Snapshots)

The last three images of this snapshot set. The views are from all around the park. First up is a view of the Omnibus on its long leg of the drive when it went around the Matterhorn mountain. You can see some of the Alice leaves in the left hand corner of the picture. Unfortunately the bus was driving too fast and the image is blurry.

The second image is of the wonderful Monsanto Home of the Future wrapped up in a gift ribbon. This image looks like a press shot.

The final image is of the Disneyland band marching into Frontierland. Not much of a crowd watching the parade.

Matterhorn and Submarine (Part 2 of Group of Snapshots)

Continuing with the group of snapshots I posted the first two yesterday. Today we are in Tomorrowland with the first image of the Matterhorn and Skyway. Unfortunately no Monorail of bobsleds, but two of the old school Skyway buckets.

The second image shows the submarine Triton navigating the Submarine Lagoon. The Matterhorn is kind of bare and the great Fantasyland Autopia sign is very visible.

Black and White Snapshots Number 1

A small set of 7 snapshots from Disneyland will be the focus of this blog for the next couple of days. The first image is of the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle. A nice dapper crowd standing in front of the castle.

The second image is a great image of the speeding monorail over the Submarine Lagoon. I never get enough images of the Monorail.

On Deck of The Pirate Ship

Two black and white snapshots taken while on the deck of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship. First up is the son exploring a chest and trying to figure out what is in the chest. Maybe this is where Captain Hook has stored all the gold?

The second picture is dad standing in front of the mast. The small width of the ship is very evident. p>

Souvenir Friday- Tinkerbell Ashtray

A very unique shape for this souvenir ashtray featuring one of the early symbols of Disneyland- Tinkerbell. The ashtray was manufactured by Eleanor Welborn who was the earliest licensee of ceramic gift items. The Disneyland font is different than the font usually seen. The back of the plate has a nice Welborn mark.

Main Street Cinema- All for 25 Cents

The wonderful post painted with advertising outside of the Main Street Cinema at a time when the films shown were various silent films. The list of silent film stars is rather extensive, but I would be willing to bet that very few people would recognize the names of the stars. Now the Main Street Cinema shows various silent Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck shorts, although they still use all 6 screens. The cinema is a nice place to go for a little less crowd time.

I believe these fire buckets were located in Rainbow Ridge. Even though not elaborate, but the font has a nice industrial look.

Tom Sawyer Island Ticket Sign

Everyone let's get your D tickets out and take a lovely raft ride to Tom Sawyer Island. Remember that cash was not accepted, so if you need to purchase a D coupon, head over to the Frontierland Central ticket booth. Make sure we get there early as the island closes at dusk.

Small World Clock

A nice view from the early 1970s of the Small World line and clock. I like the costumes the cast members are wearing with the great nautical stripes like French sailors. The photographer also caught the clock in full motion. Quite a fun photograph.

Souvenir Friday- Tea Cup

A popular souvenir during the 1950s and 1960s were tea cups. Many a roadside attraction, historical location and other gift shops sold tea cups. The cups were avidly collected and displayed proudly in many homes. This tea cup is rather plain, but the saucer more than makes up for that. The saucer has great graphics of various transportation attractions in Disneyland. The vehicles featured are the Mark Twain, Casey Junior, Horse Drawn Surrey and a Horseless Carriage. I believe this was sold in the early 1960s, probably from both the China Closet and Emporium.

Characters In Disneyland

Disneyland is a place to ride fantastic attractions, visit other places in one place and also meet fantastic animated characters that have come to life. These three photographs from the 1970s show the fun of character interaction. First up is Mickey Mouse in front of Town Square Cafe meeting a couple of fans.

Next two of the dwarves meet a couple of fans. I believe this is Happy and Grumpy. I am trying to place the location of this image with the umbrellas and tables above.

The last image is Goofy hanging out in front of the Bank of America. All the images show the joy that kids receive being able to meet their favorite animated characters.

Sunkist Citrus House

The place on Main Street for a refreshing glass of orange juice and the best doughnuts. Also an example of the artistic ability of the sign shop, especially the nice grouping of citrus at the edges.

Fire Department Sign

A lovely close up of the signage over the Fire House on Main Street Disneyland. I wonder where station 1 through 4 are located. I believe this is a subtle homage to Ward Kimball's Firehouse 5 plus 2 group.

Seattle Worlds Fair at Night- Last Set of Images

The last two images from the Sawyer's Film Strip set. First up is an image from the Adult Entertainment area of the Fair. Several shows were featured in the area including A Night in Paradise and this show, Backstage USA. Backstage USA was a show that visitors could visit a show from the stagehands perspective. The show was an adult show featuring topless show girls.

The last image features a great image of the space age architecture including the space needle and the science pavilion arches.
