Steel and Bridges

Two more views of pavilions at the 1939 New York World's Fair. First up is the steel structure for the United States Steel. The dome structure looks kind of like a hard hat. The pavilion featured the story of steel from mining to final manufacturing.

The second image shows the bridge supporting the longest escalator from the end of the show Democracity seen inside the Perisphere. The bridge connected the Trylon to the Perisphere. The two structures were the main theme buildings for the World's Fair and are featured in much of the merchandise.

Two views of the exhibit buildings at the 1939 New York World's Fair. First up is the Westinghouse exhibit. This exhibit was home to two modern marvels, the Robot and Television. The building has a great streamline industrial modern look and I really like the lighting tower, it must have looked spectacular at night.

The second image is the Kodak pavilion. The tower used to draw visitors in was composed of giant photographs. The building continues the streamline industrial modern look. I am strangely attracted to the font used for Kodak on the building.

Fred Moore Girl

Fred Moore was one of the best Disney animation artists during the Golden Age of Animation. He worked at the studio in the 1930's and was one of the main influences on Snow White. He also redesigned Mickey Mouse making him cuter. Freddie was known around the studio for his drawings of innocently sexy girls, known as Freddie Moore Girls. This is a sedate drawing with the girl wearing her boyfriend's shirt.

Time and Fates of Man New York World's Fair 1939

Another two pictures of statuary at the 1939 New York World's Fair. The statue was the largest sundial at the time measuring 80 feet tall. The sculpture was created by Paul Manship and feature the three fates of man, Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. The sculpture was located close to yesterday's statue of George Washington and the Moods of Time.

Outdoor Art at the 1939 New York World's Fair

The 1939 World's Fair was held in Flushing Meadows, New York just outside of the city of New York. The fair featured many sculptures throughout the grounds. First up is a nice image with the Moods of Time in the foreground and George Washington in the background. These statues were located in the theme center with George Washington facing the Trylon and Perisphere.

The second image features the American Telephone and Telegraph Company pavilion located in the Communications area. The sculpture is of a Pony Express rider showing how communication has changed over just a few years.

On the Rivers of America

Three photographs of the Rivers of America in 1959. First up is Fowler's Harbor with one of the Keelboats docked. I enjoy the early rustic nature of Fowler's harbor at this time period.

Next up is a you are there photograph from the deck of the Mark Twain. The image provides a nice image of the Chicken Plantation in the background.

The last image is of the Mark Twain rounding the bend by the friendly Indian Village. In the background is one of the Yellowstone coaches.

The Mark Twain on The Rivers of America

Two images from Frontierland and the Rivers of America. First up is a nice view of the Mark Twain sitting at the dock awaiting passengers. Note the lack of the landscape elements of Nature's Wonderland in the background.

The second image is taken from the Twain and shows one of the Disneyland and Santa Fe Railroad trains heading out for the grand circle tour. The Chicken Plantation is in the foreground.

Souvenir Friday- Pluto's Dog Collar

A nice costume piece is the dog collar and dog tag for Pluto. The medallion appears to be metal, but is a plastic material. My favorite part of the collar is the silver flake naugahyde used as the loop to hold the dog tag. The collar has a nice Disneyland costume tag.

Streets of Disneyland

Two different pictures of streets in Disneyland. The pictures are from 1959. The first image shows Main Street USA with the classic horse drawn street car passing through Town Square. Similar to yesterday's photograph of the Jungle River loading dock is the three dimensional look.

The second image is of the Main Street of Frontierland. The image is from the Mark Twain dock looking towards the Plaza. My eye is drawn to the towering TWA Rocket to the Moon.

Jungle River Cruise 1959

Two views of the Jungle River Cruise in 1959. First is a general overall view of the loading and unloading dock. The image has a nice three dimensional look. A very nice group of guests are on the dock, including one lady sporting a nice souvenir hat. The skipper costume is very nice.

The second image is of the jungle seen opposite of the loading dock. Note the lovely outrigger canoe on the left of the photograph.

Scenes from 1959

Two slides from a batch marked 1959 by the original photographer. First up is a great shot from the Plaza Pavilion restaurant overlooking the Plaza. In the background the Omnibus is driving by sporting advertising for the 1959 additions. Unfortunately there are no plates or serving trays to see what was in use in 1959.

The second image features Sleeping Beauty Castle with a nice crowd of guests.

Busy Day At Indian Village Frontierland

A very busy day in 1959 in Frontierland. Lots of people are visiting the Indian Village walking through the various exhibits and different indigenous structures. I am particular to the two young men wearing their fedoras and rolled up sleeves. A souvenir hat can be seen and also in the background is a cast member observing the crowd.

The second image is another shot of the Indian Village with lots of guests taking a little rest on the benches. My eyes are immediately drawn to the young boy with his souvenir spear. I also note that there are a couple ladies wearing their pearls.

Souvenir Friday- Walt Disney Educational Media Dinosaurs from Primeval World

My aunt was a school teacher and obtained this set of Dinosaur history from the Walt Disney Educational Media company. When I started collecting Disneyland items, she gave the set to me. The images are all from the Primeval World on the Disneyland Railroad. The set is dated 1972 and was meant to placed up on boards or used as educational cards with information on the reverse about the Dinosaurs. This is a set I cherish not only for the great images, but knowing my aunt used them to educate many kids with it. I did not place these in order...

Busy Afternoon on Main Street

A slight traffic jam on Main Street in an early afternoon in 1959. Several of the Main Street vehicles are out on the street...the Horse Drawn Trolley, Fringed Surrey and behind the Trolley is the Horse Drawn Fire Wagon. The crowd appears to be fairly large and the lights on the shops are beginning to turn on.

Disneyland River Traffic

The Rivers of America has many different ships that navigate the twisting river. First up is a nice image of the steamship Mark Twain pulling away from the dock on the journey around the Tom Sawyer Island. The picture was taken in the late afternoon with some nice shadows and dappled light on the water.

A second view of the Mark Twain, this time sitting at dock. It will be interesting to see how the redesign of the river proceeds.

The last image shows many of the other ships and watercraft on the Rivers of America. In the foreground is a canoe with a happy group of guests paddling their way around the island, while one of the Keel Boats awaits passengers and the Columbia sits at Fowler's Harbor.

Italy Day and Night, 1939 New York World's Fair

The Italy Pavilion from the 1939 New York World's Fair. The first image shows a day view of the statue of the goddess Roma with the waterfall and reflecting pool.

The second image is at night. The Italy Pavilion featured arts and crafts, tourism and manufactured goods from Italy. The second floor featured a fancy night club restaurant with recipes from the famous restaurants and cruise lines of Italy.

King Arthur and Negendei

The first image is a nice overhead view of a busy Fantasyland with King Arthur's Carousel in the middle of the land. Playing at the Fantasyland theater is Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day right next to Snow White's Scary Adventure. In the background can be seen the Plaza Pavilion and the Plaza Inn buildings on Main Street.

The second image is of the Enchanted Tiki Garden with a family waiting for the start of the Tiki Room show. In the background can be seen Negendei the Earth Balancer and the sign for Pele. The boy looks like he visited the Disneyland nurse station for a small injury on his knee.
