October 1954 Map of Main Street

Part of the collection of images of Main Street models is this map of the stores on Main Street. One of the most interesting things to note is the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Cartoon Museum in the Opera House. This reminds me of what was in the Opera House in Walt Disney World a couple of years ago.

Fascinating! I'd heard you mention this before - neat it see an early "alternate" location for 20K...

Wow, that is super amazing, I've NEVER heard about that before.

Also love the rough view of "International Street". How cool would tht have been?

that would have been an interesting location for the 20k walk thru....theming issues aside, it may have worked there.

At opening, the Opera House was the Mill, where all the park's wood working was done (My Dad did the air-conditioning). I've heard that the building was fire-and-soundproofed and made ready for use as a soundstage for the MMC broadcasts.

It wasn't until years later -- when the sets from 'Babes in Toyland' were installed -- that the MMC started using the hall.

What I find most interesting is in the northwest quadrant of the building where it says 'cartoon studio'. This was to be an elevated catwalk where Guests could look down and watch animators at work... the last vestige of Walt's original inspiration for DL.
