Souvenir Friday-Freedomland!

Today I am showing a brochure, a flier, a bag and the Menu from the Brass Rail Steak House that was in Chicago. The graphics on the brochure remind me of some of the Pacific Ocean Park brochures done in the same time period. Tomorrow the finish of the Freedomland slides with a trip through the South.

You never cease to amaze me with the photos and related memorabilia you post. Where do you find this stuff? You're (Major Pepperidge and Daveland included) like pop culture archealogists!

Perhaps a bit unrelated, but some of the rides and a few miscellaneous things from Freedomland ended up at the Great Escape in Lake George, NY, where I have visited many times. I used to ride Danny the Dragon as a kid. There used to be a mine-train type ride that went through a small cavern - the scenes inside the "cavern" (some flying bats, stalagtites, etc) were taken from Freedomland. A few other bits here and there (a moose, a man spinning on a log on the log flume ride) were also transplanted from Freedomland.

Perhaps one of the most famous attractions from Freedomland that made its way over was the Tornado dark ride, which I can best describe as a crude version of the Disneyland Fantasyland dark rides. It had a very Mr. Toad's Wild Ride feel to it. Unfortunately it was removed a few years ago, and I'm not sure what they did with it.

I always love hearing about old parks like this, especially when I find out that despite Freedomland closing before I was born, that I've experienced a tiny bit of it at the Great Escape. Great stuff.

  6. It's interesting to note some of the similarities to Disnyland. Both had a restaurant sponsored by Fritos for example. Also the shape of the park that that show superimposed on the US map looks vaugely familar.

Has some good information and some pictures, including some flash photos from inside the ride (scroll down and click on "A Virtual Picture Tour of the Tornado from 1998")

Any chance anyone may be able to post a pic of the firefighting certificate guests would receive for putting out the Chicago Fire, an attraction there that erupted every 20 mins or so? Thanks
