World's Fair Wednesday- 1958 Brussel's Postcards

Moving away from the slides showing the 1958 Brussels World's Fair and moving to postcards from the fair. First up is the America Pavilion. There is a great Disney connection as this is where the Circarama film was shown to promote America. The employees running the film were on leave from Disneyland.

The second postcard is of the home country Belgium pavilion. It is a postcard view with the Atomium behind the building.

June 1959 Casey Junior From the Skyway

More nice images from nice and shiny metallic Skyway buckets. First up is a view of Fantasyland with Dumbo and the lovely Skyway station.

Next up a nice view of the Casey Junior Railroad station.

Two views of Cinderella's Castle in Story Book Land. The first one is nice, but the second one includes a great shot of Owen Pope's horse barn.

Things From the Gate- 1955 Map Brochure

Starting in 1955 as you entered Disneyland you would receive a brochure featuring a nice map of the park along with descriptions of each land with the attractions described and a restaurant guide. The first one features Doc from Snow White.

Kids could take the brochure home and color the map.

Nice listing of the various restaurants and snack locations throughout the park. Happy is very happy while eating.

Caterpillars and Submarines

From June 1959 several overhead views from the shiny Skyway. First up is a shot of the caterpillar track from Alice. It appears an employee is holding up the track for the passing ride vehicles.

The TWA Rocket to the Moon and General Dynamic sign dominate this image, but you can see the Flight Circle on the right hand side of the slide.

The line for the Submarine Voyage looks like today. I hope each visitor enjoyed their ride on the gray submarine.

Gremlins!

With the passing of Disney legend and all around artist Bill Justice who put his mark on Disney through animated films, theme park and even live action films, I am posting a couple of cool images from one of the first films he worked on....Gremlins. First up is Walt explaining some of Bill's sketches. I believe Bill is standing on the upper right in the black shirt.

The next image is Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl placing some widgets on Walt.

Vaya Con Dias Bill and thanks for bringing joy with your art and personality for so many years!

Souvenir Friday- Squeeker Postcards

A small collection of the wonderfully fun squeeker postcards that were sold as souvenirs in the late 1950s through the 1960s. First up from a very rare series is Danny the Black Lamb. Danny was one of the stars of So Dear to My Heart. The film was one of Walt Disney's favorite films.

Next up is my favorite film Dumbo. The card features Dumbo and his friend Timothy Mouse.

One of the more amusing squeeker's is this one featuring one of the Seven Dwarves.

Final postcard for today is my favorite Professor, Ludwig Von Drake. Here he lectures on Disneyland. Check out his notes on his tablet.

Matterhorn and Monorail

Simple post today from June of 1959 when both attractions were new and shiny. First up is an early morning view of the Matterhorn.

My favorite buckets in nice and shiny metal colors.

Monorail Red standing in the station. The Disneyland Alweg Monorail lettering on top of the station reminds me of the sugar letters used on birthday cakes.

World's Fair Wednesday- Sputnik and More

First up is a nice exterior image of a building. Unfortunately the slide is not titled. I assume it is for the United States....but I can't quite read the title on the building. I do like the skyway and the plethora of flags.

Next up is an interior display seen in the Congo Pavilion. I believe it shows the planning of crops in order to maximize the land.

Next up the interior of the Russia Pavilion featuring the space age satellite the Sputnik III. The launch of these satellites spurred the creation of NASA and the space race.

The hosting company has said that they are under a hacker attack and are working on a solution.

Jungle Cruise Inhabitants

First I am aware of issues with the pictures and am working with my hosting company. Hopefully by tomorrow everyone can see the images.

And these images I think are fun to see, the inhabitants of the Jungle River Cruise in 1959. First up is the Gorilla who looks kind of like Mighty Joe Young.

Next up are two images of the native people of the jungle. Be careful as they are throwing spears. If you happen to catch one, please throw it back as we are not allowed to keep souvenirs.

Things From the Gate- 1966 Advertising Brochure

A cool little brochure put out in 1966 to promote the 3 new attractions: It's A Small World, New Orleans Square, and Primeval World. I love the design of this brochure and the size is very distinctive.

The Indian Dance

This post is dedicated to Major Pepperidge because he has not seen enough Indian Dancers. However, first up is a rare image of the Indian Burial ground on Tom Sawyer's Island. I believe this burial tradition is based upon the upper plains Native Americans.

Next up are three shots of the Indian Dancers. The ring dance in the final image looks pretty spectacular.

Disneyland Band

The photographer followed the Disneyland band as it roamed through the park. First up is a shot, albeit slightly blurry, of the band playing on the foredeck of the Mark Twain. I think we should all petition Disneyland and have the band playing on the Mark Twain again.

Next up is a nice distance shot with the Mark Twain at dock and the band still playing.

Final image is of the band playing at the Main Street Opera House. Check out the attraction posters in the background.

Souvenir Friday- MGM Studio Restaurant Menu

If you were lucky enough to be a tourist in 1957 and get on the MGM Studios, you were able to dine at a full service restaurant. The daily specials menu featured all of the cartoon characters including Tom and Jerry, Droopy and Spike and Tyke. Some of the entrees sound kind of tasty, others do not.

Scenes Along the River

More nice images from a talented photographer. These appear to have been taken on a cruise of the Mark Twain. First up is an image of the fishing piers. If you look in the background, you can see the tent for Holidayland.

Next up is a shot of the moose along the river with everyone's favorite burning cabin in the background.

Of course no trip is complete with a nice image of the flambe cabin.

Final image is of castle rock on Tom Sawyer's Island. It appears to have been a popular spot on this day.

World's Fair Wednesday-Another Set of Modern Buildings Brussels 1958

More fantastic images from the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. First up is the European Community building with gothic cathedral inspired steel beams. The beams have a fish design on them.

Next up is a nice shell shaped building for the United Nations building. Definitely a classic modern design, reminds me of the Mission Bay San Diego tourist information center.

Next image is of a soaring building that is unmarked on the slide. It may be the administration building for the fair.

Final image is an interior shot of an electric dynamo in action.
