Things From the Gate- 1964 Gate Map
Continuing the posts featuring the gate maps for Disneyland. This one is from 1964 with a new and less detailed map for the interior.
I never quite understood the change to that ugly, no-fun map. They already had the fun cartoony version that had been used for several years, it couldn't have been very difficult to make whatever minor changes were necessary.
At the risk of pronouncing high heresy, it's the covers I always found lacking. The design is supposed to show the Magic Kingdom's five lands, linked together by an enchanted thread, but the negative frames around each land character breaks the flow up so badly as to be awkward. I'm surprised the cover lasted as long as it did.
As for the interior map, I agree it's not much fun, but a change is as good as a rest. Whenever you hand out the same gate piece year after year, you leave the public with the impression that nothing's changed. Also by the mid 60s, these 50's school graphics were looking kind of long in the tooth.
