Included with the lot of material with the Snow White postcard was this clipping dated 43 years ago from a local Orange County newspaper. The clipping reports on the opening of Ken-L-Land the day before.

Ken-L-Land was such a great idea. Keeps pets safe and promotes dog food. The picture is really cute.
ReplyDeleteSuper cool card. Although, Happy has been coloring his eyebrows to look more youthful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great article. And the picture (although obviously staged) is brilliant. The concept is really an extension of Walt's philosophy of a place for the "whole family." After all, aren't are dogs and cats members of the family? (Ours are!). Thanks for posting this! Paul
ReplyDeleteThe Ken-L-Land article is great. Food and water? No extra charge! Those were the days.
ReplyDeleteI have a variation of that postcard without the white border. I double checked to make sure it hadn't been trimmed by somebody, too!
Happy is definitely coloring his eyebrows because they're white in the film. Makes him look 20 years younger. :)
ReplyDelete@Snow White: you have *sharp* eyes. I think it makes him look like Ward Kimball LOL.
ReplyDeleteEven though we were locals, I always wanted to take my dog there. My dad thought I was nuts.
ReplyDeleteDisney A-Z says the Kennel opened on January 18, 1958. As that's the only thing that's ever happened on my birthday, I prefer that as the opening date. :) (And goes to show that it can be difficult to pin down dates in Disneyland lore. I would trust the Walt Disney Archives to have good information, but on the other hand I have no idea where they got the January 18 date. The newspaper article is at least contemporary...but could easily be in error. Or the handwritten date could be mistaken, but I think that's less likely.)
