Another Disneyland publicity photograph. This time it is of the Flying Saucers in Tomorrowland. The caption taped to the reverse reads: FLYING SAUCERS are now a reality based in a "Space Station" in Disneyland's Tomorrowland. Here the guests may climb aboard his own craft, fasten his safety belt and actually take off in free flight and guide his own space ship.
This ride was so uniquely "Disneyland"... I can't imagine another park even attempting something like this back in 1961. The concept was clever, but the technology of the day just wasn't up to par.

ReplyDeleteStill without a doubt, one of the coolest rides ever.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have ridden those...is there anyone out there who did, what was it like?
ReplyDeleteMatt, I rode it many times. And not once did it break down. A wonderful and very fun ride.
ReplyDeleteHuman Air Hockey!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat was the sound like? I've read they had some pretty series blowers forcing air up thru the floor. I've seen photos of the underside, WOW, what a contraption!
Amazing that an attraction that has been extinct for decades still gets love letters.
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember these...I was quite a skinny 6 year old kid when I tried to control the flying saucer...I was bouncing up and down with no control since I just didn't weigh enough!! So some handsome ride operator came to my rescue and drove the thing for me...he must've sat next to me, although looking at the pix, there was hardly any room...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely one of most memorable experiences which was worth the long wait time and way too short when in "flight". I remember those riders who worked hard to get the saucer bouncing up and down. That wasn't me...I was a "glider". Never been a more fun experience. Literally floating on air. Yep, it was an E ticket too.
