New York World's Fair Part 1

I think I am going to spend a week exploring the New York Worlds Fair of 1964. All of these slides are in a funky plastic mount and are 16mm in size. The images are still pretty nicely done. The first shows the icon of the Fair- the Unisphere. It appears the Boy Scouts are worn out from exploring the Fair.

The next image is of the other soft drink pavilion, the Coca Cola World of Refreshment. I wonder if they wished they had worked with Walt Disney?

The Vatican actually sponsored a pavilion and I believe this is the main structure, a compact baroque Gothic church. Edit- experts in the New York World's Fair of 1964 have alerted me this is the Thailand Pavilion. Thanks guys!

Finally for all the monorail fans, a shot of the AMF monorail under the track.

Tomorrow more images from the '64 Fair.

  1. Great monorail pic. Coca-Cola pavilion is a beauty.

  2. What you have listed as the Vatican Pavilion was actually the Thailand Pavilion. After the NY fair ended the same pavilion was shipped up to Montreal for Expo '67.

  3. Ditto Bill Cotter. You were seeing who was awake with that "Catholic Baroque Gothic" stuff, right?

  4. These are really wonderful, quality images!

I honestly always wondered if the Thailand pavilion was the same one at both fairs (could it have been used at other fairs as well?), so that is a great piece of info.

"The Vatican actually sponsored a pavilion..."

Don't be too surprised, but the Vatican pavilion was one of the most popular of the fair. Michaelangelo's Pieta was shipped over (and very handsomely insured) and put on display in a rather ugly modern structure, but millions went to see it.

I just found this website. I'm obsessed with World's Fair pictures...are there more? I can't find them past this first page. I just finished visiting Corona Park (former NY World's Fair) and got pictures of what's left. I want to see more from the past like this. Thanks!!

    Hi,

My name is Ali -- I'm a freelance reporter doing a story on the 1964 World's Fair, and including an interactive map with photos. I came across your pictures and think they're wonderful. I was wondering if we could talk about if I could use a few, and of course give you credit. My email is alessandra (at) malitomedia (dot) com. Thank you!

I attended JHS 126 in Brooklyn NY during the World's Fair in 1964. I was a member of the School Choir at John Ericsson JHS and performed at the World's Fair . We won the performance which was at the World's Fair in I believe in 1964. The leading sing was a Soprano named Johanna Meah. I never forgot the performance. My name was Janet Mitchell . I am 72 years old and still remember that experience!
