Negatives

Delving into a collection of negatives I have chosen two photographs to post. The first is one of my favorite spots in the park, the Court of the Angels in New Orleans Square. This is my favorite time period with the large paper mache lacquer statues and flowers for sale.

The other is from the Plaza Inn before it was remodeled. It does look just like a house from this angle...with the exception of the red light on the table and the fire sprinkler head on the ceiling of the porch.

  1. My mom had (and might still have) two paper maché figures that look very much like the two in the Court of Angels... only hers are much smaller. Designed to fit over hairspray cans! They are VERY 60's.

  3. The paper maché sales figures are very interesting - Major, if you ever come across your Mom's set, can you post them?

The figures remind me of the "moon face" dolls/graphics that showed up in the late 60's and early 70's. Large, round pale heads with fine black line work showing rather florid-looking faces.

Remember the Chess pieces in the "Europe" theater at It's a Small World? That was Rolly Crump's take on this type of graphic arts - and since he already had experience decorating some of the Adventureland shops, I wonder if he had a hand in the creation of these figures.

  4. About the Court of the Angels...

Note that there is not a plaque on the wall giving that name or mentioning music. Even though it would have been one of the entrances to the proposed jazz club that was supposed to have gone upstairs above the French Market at one point.

Wasn't this area referred to as the Theives Market at one time? I seem to recall the reference.

  5. I believe the Theives Market is the open space between the Pieces of Eight shop and One of the Kind shop (now used for merchandise for Pirates.)

  6. Wow, you and the commenters of this blog have even more in-depth Disneyland history info than the unoffical "source" for Disney news (Laughingplace.com)! The photos are fantastic, thanks for sharing them! Will be adding you to my list of blogs I follow and my link list, too.
