Dumbo Ticket Booth
This ticket booth still survives to this day, it just has been redesigned and now holds the calliope organ located next to Dumbo. In this configuration, it is a pretty little ticket booth. The signs on the front are wonderful with Dumbo costing 25 cents to ride him. I would love to find one of the signs, but I think everyone else would as well. The souvenir hats are also on full display. I bet the son convinced dad to buy that feathered job. Finally I don't know about you, but I think Walt would have been upset to see his employee leaning on the rail like that. He really should get back to work!
Awesome Ticket booth Picture!!!! 25¢ for the Flying Elephant "Ride" Oh, I guess it's not an "attraction" yet. No mention of a "B" ticket either, neat early photo, do you have a date on these? I would guess '56.
ReplyDeleteYes, another great photo from this neat series! That employee looks like he is there to intimidate anybody who even THINKS they want to ride his flying elephants.
ReplyDeleteDuh- I had no idea the calliope was a recycled ticket booth. Great pic!
ReplyDeleteFantastic shot. That employee is simply too cool to be working Dumbo. He needs a transfer to the Viewliner.
ReplyDeleteUpon closer inspection, I think the current “calliope” structure is not the same one as the ticket booth in this vintage photo. The size seems wrong (the roof especially). Here is a photo showing the “New Fantasyland” construction from April 1, 1983. It appears that the “calliope” building is new construction, maybe they reused some of the old ticket booth, but it looks all new to me. Now I will have to take 100’s of photos on my next trip to find out for certain.

Great shot of the booth! Thanks for sharing as usual!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHmmm... just what IS that guys job? He may not be working the Dumbo ride at all.
ReplyDeleteWith his eagle-eyed attitude he may just be an area supervisor stopping to survey the scene - making sure all is well.
When was this pic taken? If it's '59 or after, I think that guy might be one of the temporary summer hires for the flight circle. He really looks familiar, and I think his name was Tom. Notice the "non-black" belt (required by Disney), and the "non-standard" shoes (very dirty, possibly from model airplane fuel). He also doesn't have a brass employee badge above the Disneyland patch (normal for real Disney people) so that may indicate he is a lessee type. I would even bet he is loafing around waiting for the ticket seller to get off on her break.
ReplyDeleteAll this sounds like a great story, but I guess we'll never know.
