Today's post is from a reader of the blog. He sent the following images taken by Hazel Greenwald in the early 1960s. Hazel was the main proponent behind the Hadassah film archive in New York. The Hadassah is the Women's Zionist Organization of America. For more information on Hazel, check out this
student paper and also the post today on Didier Ghez'
Disney History blog. The images are all black and white. It appears she was at the park very early as there are not many guests around, but enough to show the park was open. A favorite of the owner is the Disneyland band in front of the Tinkerbell Toy Shop and my favorite is of Frontierland with the Mark Twain in the background.
What's with the walls in front of the castle?
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen the Disneyland Band wearing those stripey armbands before!
Great photos! All to often we see something today and think it was always like that. It's nice to have a sense of perspective.

I like the photo of the Disneyland Band in front of the Tinker Bell Toy Shop because you can see all four themed beams protruding from under the edge of the shop's roof. From left to right are Tick Tock, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, and Nana. The two on the right (Smee and Nana) were removed during construction of New Fantasyland in 1982, but Hook and the crocodile should still be present on the renamed Once Upon a Time shop (aka Disney Princess Shoppe).
ReplyDeleteOver on Didier's blog the owner says they were taken "pre-1960," but also that they may be from the "late 1950s." I wonder if they're from 1956, and that's a construction wall for Carnation Plaza Gardens (opened 8/18/1956)?
