Skull Rock Fantasyland 1961

One of the best lost Disneyland items was the evocative Skull Rock located behind the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship restaurant. This image is from the first year that the rock was in place and is an absolutely gorgeous shot. I definitely miss the rock and the pirate ship restaurant. I am happy that the swimming pool for the Disneyland Hotel had a make over and the imagineers did do a homage to Skull Rock. Slide is marked Disneyland Sept. 61 and is kodachrome.

  2. It was quite something, especially with the waterfall going which is not in this shot. The waterfall would come from the mouth of the skull. And if memory serves me correct, you could walk up steps and be in the skull where the eyes were. At night this would be lit up in spooky colors.

This is such a great shot! Man...

There are those wistful comments that Disney should do a whole themepark with all of the rides and attractions gotten rid of over the years. This would be Example #1. So cool...

Was going through old family slides and found a shot of this from 1966. Googled "disneyland skull waterfall" to see what it was and found your site :)

FYI You have your photo backwards (my slide was taken from the same angle but has a bit of signage in frame so I can tell which way it goes)

  5. I have been trying to find one of the plaster skulls that used to be sold at Disneyland at the end of an adventure ride (I don't know which one). They were sold fro 1962 to recently. The kind of gothic skull about 4" tall. If you don't have perhaps you can point me in the right direction, I have googled everywhere with no luck. I will pay good price and can send photo.; thanks rk ckrego@aol.com
