More Pictures From the Parking Lot Couples

Three more images from the same family that photographed themselves in the Parking Lot. This time the photographs are of the whole family and inside the park. First up is the obligatory picture at the Mickey Mouse Topiary and Main Street Station.

Next up is a fantastic shot of my favorite mountain. I believe this was snapped while the family was riding the Monorail over the Submarine Lagoon.

Final image is of the three young boys posing with Mickey and Minnie. All three of the boys are very dapper and the one boy wearing the plaid shirt is holding his ticket books tightly.

Souvenir Friday- Gifts From Disneyland Catalog

This gift catalog is from 1959 and features some great souvenir items. Most people will fixate upon the animation cels available for sale. However my eyes go to some of the more obscure souvenirs like the Skyway Chalet weather predictor and the Submarine Voyage charm bracelet. Now to go back in time and do a little shopping.

Parking Lot Circa 1959

Three images of one of the beloved lost areas of Disneyland, the parking lot. Two of the views show the lovely Matterhorn, a sight I remember as being magical and the sign that we had arrived at Disneyland. First up a shot of one of the couples with the Matterhorn in the background.

Next up the two couples who had just enjoyed a day at the park walking back to their vehicles.

Another shot of both couples with one of the gentleman holding ticket books in his pocket and his wife holding a 1959 Guidebook. They are standing in front of a Pontiac Station Wagon.

Prop Plaza Universal Studios Hollywood

Once upon a time at Universal Studios there was a prop plaza featuring large objects from Land of the Giants as well as vehicles you could pose in with a rolling screen and also styrofoam rocks you could pick up. It was a fun place to hang out and play, as well as many a souvenir photograph was taken at the site. First up is the Stagecoach with the scrim rolling behind it.

Next up are a set of books featuring recent movies released by Universal. Such classics as Jaws, the Hindenburg and Earthquake.

This photo was not loading initially, but it is a great image of the prop telephone.

"it's a small world"

A nice set of photographs featuring the front of "it's a small world." First up is the family posing in front of the sign. The little girl in the middle is using the built in sunglasses on her hat.

Next up are images of the wonderful clock at the front of the attraction. This clock was designed by Rolly Crump and features a great kinetic parade.

Hot Fresh Popcorn 1958

Two color snapshots from 1958. First off the very good looking young man is posing in front of the Popcorn Wagon on Main Street.

His girl friend is posing on the steps of Main Street Station. In the background is a light pole sign for the new Grand Canyon for the railroad and a large banner for Alice in Wonderland and the Columbia.

Southern Hospitality In Disneyland

Meeting old friends from favorite story books is part of the magic of Disneyland as these young visitors discover with old Br'er Fox hanging around the corner in New Orleans Square. The famous Uncle Remus characters is among 50 Disney film stars who come to life at Disneyland. New Orleans Square recreates the atmosphere of the Old South with its lace iron balconies, unique shops and sidewalk cafes. Here too is the exciting "Pirates of the Caribbean" adventure.

Souvenir Friday- Travel Decals

A common practice in the 1950s and 1960s was for families to purchase souvenir decals from tourist attractions and then slide them on their Ford Country Squire station wagons. Neighbors would then be jealous of the family and their many trips to distant locations. Disneyland of course was included in this fad. These decals are the earliest ones that I have found...and feature a cool design of the Sleeping Beauty Castle. I believe the small ones were sold to place on notebooks, boxes and other small items.

Fantasyland Autopia February 1970

Two nice views of the Fantasyland Autopia taken in February 1970. Most people will wonder where are the Mark VII cars at this late date. However, for Fantasyland the cars used for Fantasyland were Mark VI models with the great scalloped look. I believe a few months after this photograph was taken, Mark VII cars were put on the Fantasyland Autopia.

The May 1961 Disneylander features the Spring Tonics of 1961 (basically a show that poked fun at Disneyland and management while increasing cast member morale), Grad Nite, and the Bowling League Banquet. For those who may not know, the Disneylander was the cast member publication. The newsletter showcased employees and their activities as well as activities around Disneyland.

Next up is the suspension bridge over the water at the Magic Kingdom's version of Tom Sawyer Island. This photograph is nicely posed.

A Trip to Florida Via Polaroids Part 1

We head to Florida today to visit the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida. I like how the polaroid film process makes the park seem to be dreamy and soft focused. First up is a view of Main Street with the larger and more ornate buildings.

Next up is the Coke Corner with the piano player pounding out some ragtime.

The castle in Florida is much larger and more ornate. Cinderella's Castle works with the more ornate Main Street and larger area of the Magic Kingdom.

Disneyland Marquees

Great pictures of some signs at Disneyland. First up is the iconic and gone Disneyland sign on Harbor Boulevard. This photo was taken in 1983 when Disneyland was celebrating the new Fantasyland.

Next up is an image from 1986 featuring the Gift Giver Extradoinare Marquee. After the success of the 30th Anniversary gift program, Disneyland continued a similar promotion in 1986.

The last image for today is also from 1986 and shows the marquee for The Country Bear Jamoboree.

Donald Duck's 50th Birthday Parade and Party

In 1984 Disneyland promoted Donald Duck's 50th Birthday by featuring a parade called Goin' Quackers. The parade featured many of the cartoon characters including Snow White and the Seven Dwarves as well as Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and Goofy. In addition to the parade, there was also a birthday party with decorations, hats and noise makers. First up are three images of the Parade, with Mickey and Minnie.

Next up are Donald's nephews on the float and Snow White and the Dwarves out front.

An overhead view (from the Skyway) of the large birthday cake that was the featured float of the parade.

Final image shows a view of the Party in Tomorrowland with Tweedle Dee and Dum.

Coming from the staff, electrical, or paint shop is this nice hard hat. A great decal on front identifies the helmet as coming from Disneyland. A couple of famous photographs show Walt in the African Veldt on the Jungle Cruise talking to a worker wearing a similar hat.

In response to a request from Jason at Disneyland Nomenclature, I am posting several of my Disneylander magazines. Disneylander was the first cast member magazine and was published by the Disneyland Recreation Club and featured many articles on the various cast members and also events. In later years there was a series of issues that spotlighted the various lessee companies. This is the first issue which does not have a volume or number. I like the early kind of crudeness for this issue with the ads being hand drawn and the typography being type from a typewriter. Still some nice information on George Whitney who was the ride consultant and also a nice New Years greeting from Fred Schumacher who was the General Services Director. Enjoy reading this magazine.

1984 Views

These images show how verdant and green Disneyland was in the 1980s. I know that several of these trees had to be cut down due to age and disease, but other trees were trimmed for the view. I think I liked the greener and large trees. First picture is a view of the Tomorrowland of my childhood.

Next up is the Rivers of America with the Mark Twain, Canoes and the Columbia all in one image.

Final image for today shows the Skyway and its nice landing in Fantasyland.

Souvenir Friday- Disneyland Band Hat

Another Disneyland band hat, one of the dress parade hats. The badge is nice with Sleeping Beauty Castle in the middle of the badge. I also love the feathered plume as it reminds me of Music Man. This hat was used in the 1980s.

Attractions of 1984

From a good group of photographs taken in 1984 when Donald Duck's 50th Birthday Party was happening. These do not show the actual party site, but rather attractions and locations around Disneyland. First up is a shot of the Plaza Pavilion. Disney has trained the birds to help clean up the left over food and dishes.

Next up is a view of the Flower Mart on East Center Street on Main Street. Check out the Hallmark Communications Shop in the background.

Final image is a lost view, taken from the Goodyear Peoplemover. Note that the Rocket Jets are still an attraction, not just a set piece.

Dolphin Show at Sea World

Three more images of characters at Disneyland. First up are two pictures of a group of characters who do not appear very often. First up is Robin Hood and Little John from the animated Robin Hood film.

Here is the villian of the film, Prince John, gets a peck on the cheek from a guest.

Final photograph today is a Tweedle (Dum or Dee) giving the photographer a hug....during the Donald Duck 50th Birthday Celebration at the Tomorrowland stage in 1984.

Characters For Christmas

As a Christmas gift for all my readers, here are some pictures of characters to enjoy. First up it is not Christmas without Charlie Brown (and Lucy of course.)

Next up is a nice image of Snow White meeting a young fan. This is quite a crowd of guests around the characters. Dave- I am sorry about the strollers without a stroller alert!

Last up is a shot of a Keystone Cop...I guess the guest was being caught being naughty.

A 1959 Visit to New Attractions

October 22, 1959 was a lovely Thursday with a high of 84 degrees and 6,825 attendees and this family visited two of the new attractions. First up is the alpine pool splashdown on the Matterhorn.

This pictures is a new favorite, the nuclear family posing on a nuclear submarine, Tommy the older brother, Timmy the younger brother and Helen the mom posing while George the dad takes the photographer (and those are not the real names, just ones I made up.)

Souvenir Friday- Celebrity Lanes Celebrity Room Menu

Ever since I moved to Denver I have been looking hard for items from Celebrity Lanes. I have found several items, a couple of patches from the model car raceway, matchbooks, ashtrays and even a glass from the bowling league. This menu was a particularly nice find. I believe this is from the early 1960s. The Celebrity Room was a high end restaurant, serving Lobster, Duck and more. In reading this menu, I have always wondered what would happen if you went into a restaurant as a single diner and ordered the Chateaubriand for two? Would they serve it to you or refuse to serve the dinner?

Now to find some photographs and some operating procedures for Celebrity Lanes.

Bundled Up (April 13, 1965)

On a nice Tuesday, a family with a cute daughter visited Disneyland. It was a little chilly (48 degrees was the low, but a high of 66 degrees with a trace of precipitation.) Attendance was 30,165 for the day, although the park looks a little less crowded than that. I am sure the Dapper Day group will love these pictures with dad dressed in a very nice and dapper outfit as well as mom and daughter.

The final four images from the 1955 (or early 1956) trip. The photographers favorite attraction was the Mark Twain. First up are three images of the ship navigating the waters of the Rivers of America. Some nice background elements, such as the train speeding by in one image and Fowler's Harbor in another image.

My favorite shot of this photographers obsession with the Mark Twain is this abstract picture of the paddle wheel.

Well I have reached a milestone in this blog, this is my 2000th post. My first post was 6 years and 1 day ago, with a post showing the balloon vendor in Fantasyland dressed as a clown.

Souvenir Friday- 1950s Band Hat

Found many years ago at a thrift shop by one of my friends, a hat for the Disneyland band. This hat at one point in time was a nice blue, but for some reason (maybe Disneyland's Tencenniel?) it was spray painted gold. I do like the embroidery on the front and the Ostwald label in the interior. A very nice hat from one of the most visible groups from Disneyland.

Today is a kind of catch all and wrap up, even though I still have 8 slides to post. First up another view of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship still being finished. Once again look at all the souvenir hats and how nicely everyone is dressed for their trip to Disneyland.

Next up a nice view of a popcorn wagon on Main Street. Notice supplies are under the machine on the metal oil catch pan. Somebody better get on the discarded cup before Walt sees it.

Final image for today is this lovely dusk view of Town Square. I miss those nice Southern California evenings.

Today I feature two pictures of the Railroad. First up is a head on portrait of the C.K. Holliday sitting at the station in Frontierland. The engine is quite shiny and bright.

The second image shows how the Indian dancers would commute to work. Some nice signs on the cars and an interesting stencil on the sign, reading Keep Out Railroad Property.

Two icons of Disneyland. First up is another view of Sleeping Beauty Castle. The hat concession must have made lots of money this day. Check out all the souvenir hats!

Tomorrowland definitely did not excite this photographer. This is the only picture of Tomorrowland, although it is a beauty. I wish the photographer had spent more film in this land. Another slide with lots of souvenir hats!

Sleeping Beauty Castle in all its glory. First up a nice view of the castle with a crowd.

A nice view of the drawbridge with several guests hanging out and a white swan swimming gracefully.

For Major Pepperidge, here is a close up of the signs on the Dumbo Ticket Booth. I cannot tell, but it just looks like scribbling on the sign, not Timothy and Dumbo's autographs.

Today is ticket booths for Tim (at Vintage Disneyland Tickets) and all the other sign geeks. First up is a crowded shot of the Casey Junior ticket booth in action.

The next picture is of the rarely seen Dumbo ticket booth. This booth is also in action as well. Check out the signs not only the big sign, but also the cool little shield sign.

I can see why a ticket book made more sense, less cast members are needed to person each ticket booth for each attraction. All the tickets for Fantasyland attractions can be purchased from one booth instead of multiple booths. Eventually even land ticket booths were not required as guests would buy a multi ticket book at the front entrance and use the tickets as needed. Of course, tickets also spread guests throughout the park riding various levels of rides, instead of everyone waiting in line for that E ticket ride.

Souvenir Friday- Train Conductor Hat

In the mid to late 1980s Disneyland stopped running the railroad for a couple of years while Splash Mountain was being constructed. During this time, the conductors and train engineers were all transferred to other jobs. During construction, most of them were given their hats and badges. Of course, some of the cast members sold them, which is how I obtained this set up. When the trains started running again, the hat badges were recast and are made of shinier metal.

The photographer really liked a couple of attractions. The first is the Dumbo ride as there are several photographs of the ride. First up is this view with the Casey Junior in the background. Note that there is no landscaping for Storybook Land and the trestle looks like it is in the sky.

Another view from an elevated location (but don't know where?) that shows the plain ground at the Dumbo ride and the exposed mechanical structure.

Two views from the Mad Tea Party. First is what at first glance is a ho-hum and common picture of the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship in Fantasyland as seen from the Tea cups. A quick and closer look shows scaffolding and workers busy painting and finishing the ship. In the background is a construction truck.

Next up is a nice view of the tea cups being loaded. Check out the Peter Pan attraction facade in the background.

I do not know much history behind this hat and never seeing photographs with a cast member wearing this hat. I purchased this back in the 1990s and I believe the hat was used in the 1980s or even the 1970s. I believe the patch with the castle is cut down from a Security patch and the Motorman piece is metal letters on a leather backing.

Continuing with images of the castle courtyard,first up for today is Merlin's Magic Shop and a balloon vendor. The early balloon vendor costume was a jester's outfit.

Souvenir Friday- American Egg House Menu

Most likely from 1978 a menu from the American Egg House. The restaurant was located on Main Street at the old Maxwell House/Hills Brothers Coffee House location. A favorite spot of many guests for breakfast, but also serving lunch and dinner. The restaurant was open from July 14, 1978 and closed on September 30, 1983. The site then became the Town Square Cafe. (Thanks to Jason's Almanac.)

Continuing the photographic exploration of Disneyland in 1956 with these two front and back shots of the Main Street Station. First up is the front side of the station. Note the population sign reads 3,000,000. According to Jason's Almanac the 5 Millionth visitor was on October 3,1956, so these images are prior to that date.

Next up is an image of the back side of the station with the Information Kiosk which also served as a souvenir shop as well. One of the guests is clutching what appears to be a 1955 Gate Flier and there is a Keppy Kap on the counter.

Two more images from Main Street. First up a fantastic shot of the Fire Station with the Horse Drawn Fire Engine heading out to answer a fire alarm. Notice the trees are pretty sparse and young in the background.

One of the best views of the bandstand I have seen. I agree with the comment made by David yesterday that this is most likely July given the number of flags and bunting.

Starting a new series of very nice images from what I believe is 1956. First up is Main Street with two nice views. First up is a nice view of the Wurlitzer shop and the Hill Brothers Coffee shop.

And this nice view is from the steps of the Main Street Railroad Station looking down Main Street towards the Castle.

Next up are two images from 1961. First up is an image of Tomorrowland. I am calling this dreamy for the dream like soft focus of the background.

Same family, same dreamy focus in the background, but this time at the Disneyland Hotel. I want the Willy's truck in the background.

The next image is a nice shot of the Popcorn wagon at the Hub. I like the grease and oil trap that the wagon is sitting on.

Souvenir Friday- Second Version of Jolly Trolley Hat

Last week I showed the first design of the Jolly Trolley hat worn as a costume by cast members in Toontown. Today is the second version. Still a fun design with a great checkerboard and shape, it is still not as nice or "cartoony" as the first design.

This is also a nice image of a balloon vendor on the It's A Small World esplanade. The yellow costume is quite....something.

Part 3 of this series of slides showcases the old Fantasyland. Within 2 years Fantasyland would be remade and themed to a castle courtyard rather than the Renaissance Faire style. For the sign geeks, check out the Mad Hatter ticket booth, the shield for the Mad Hatter and the shield with the red Griffin. Also check out the Tea Party with the white garden style of fencing.

Next up is a nice view King Arthur's Carrousel in action.

First up is a nice you are there photograph of two guests on the Disneyland Railroad. In the background is the entrance.

Next up is a nice shot of Chip in Frontierland standing in front of the Pendleton exhibit. Based upon what I can read on the Magic Kingdom tickets being worn by the two ladies, the day is August 2, 1981 which was a Sunday with a high of 81 degrees. The park opened at 9 AM and closed at 12 AM.

Over the next several days I am going to cover a trip that a family took to Disneyland in August of 1981. The slides are in the order they were taken and developed. The first attraction the family jumped on was the Disneyland Railroad. From the look of the line, the park was pretty crowded.

On the train, they passed through the entrance to It's A Small World. I have always enjoyed the way that the entrance to It's A Small World and the Railroad are intertwined. The trains add extra movement to the attraction.

Submarine Voyage is 101 and More

Though slightly blurry, the first slide shows how a Submarine that has stopped running is towed back to the dock. The fact that the Mermaids are watching this happen just adds to the image.

This slide is in much sharper focus, shows the Mermaids sunning themselves with the Matterhorn and the Fantasyland Autopia in the background.

Last image today is a bonus, the family posing in front of the Fantasyland ticket booth...specifically the Casey Junior Railroad booth. The theming of the booth is amongst the best examples. I am happy to note that this structure still exists, used as the break area and employee area for the cast members working Casey Junior.

Snow White Wishing Well and Horse Drawn Trolley

I have always liked the Snow White Wishing Well as an area away from crowds and a place to hang out and watch the fun little show. It also helps you can with for anything, such as the return of the Peoplemover or Nature's Wonderland.

Next up is a shot of a very packed Horse Drawn Trolley. Everyone is dressed dapper, no shorts, cropped t-shirts or daisy dukes in sight here.

Souvenir Friday- Jolly Trolley Hat

When Mickey's Toontown opened, the Jolly Trolley used to actually run on the tracks. The conductor's on this cartoon trolley wore costumes to match their vehicle and the land. The most iconic part of the costume is the hat with the Jolly Trolley logo as a hat badge. Within a couple of years, the costume was changed and this style of Jolly Trolley hats disappeared.

A Trip on the Mark Twain

Two views of the Mark Twain. First up is a blurry shot of the entrance with the Mark Twain at the dock. She is very dapper in her dress and sweater.

Now the photographer and his family are on the Mark Twain. This is a time when smoking was allowed almost everywhere, notice the pack of Marlboro's. I wonder what is in the ladies multicolor shopping bag?

The final group of images from Japanese Deer Park. One of the major attractions were the various trained animals. Not only were the shows popular, but feeding the animals was also a big draw. The three photographs today show feeding seals, birds and dolphins.

One of the main attractions at the Japanese Deer Park was the flock of deer. The deer were very tame and very hungry, eating anything presented to them.

Another big draw was the performing bears. The bear sweeping is very entertaining.

So the family stayed at the Disneyland Hotel and went to Japanese Village Deer Park up the freeway in Buena Park. I do not think they went to Disneyland...but I am happy they went to the Deer Park and preserved the trip in these photographs. First photograph is of the entrance to the deer petting area I believe.

I believe this vendor is selling dove food for the dove petting pavilion which is shown in the next photograph.

Souvenir Friday- Main Street Trolly Advertising Drawing and Popcorn Wagon

Due to a day of travel, I did not post yesterday. So here is my Thursday image, an oversize (20 by 16 inches) art photograph of one of the Main Street Popcorn Wagons, taken by a talented amateur to be displayed at his local camera club display.

The souvenir piece is the final drawing that I own for the Horse Drawn Trolley Advertising. For the Purex company of cleaners featuring their Old Dutch brand of cleanser. The design features cans of the product with the Dutch Girl chasing dirt away. The cleanser is similar to Comet and is still being produced to this day. I do not remember Purex being a sponsor at the park....so this may have been created to sway them or even just as a way to put some turn of the century realism to the ads. Purex had just purchased the rights to this cleaning product in April of 1955.

Continuing with images from Santa's Village in Lake Arrowhead California in September 1966. This is a different family from the previous slides. First up is the entrance to the Alice In Wonderland walk through attraction. I love the signs out front advertising the various scenes.

Next up is Santa Claus and Jack O' Lantern. I adore the Jack O' Lantern costume and wondered what happened to it.

The next set of photographs from Santa's Village taken in March 1966. First up is a slide (which I bet would be very cold in the snow) and in the background is the Bee Monorail track.

Next up is a nice view of the sleigh ride. The tunnel is nice in the background.

Final view is of the welcome structure. The candy cane sign is fantastic as is the sign showing when the park was open and the cute clock tower with two clocks.

Souvenir Friday- Original Art for Horse Drawn Trolley Sign for Carnation

With all the changes taking place on Main Street and the re-expansion of Carnation Cafe, I thought I would show another piece of original art for the Horse Drawn Trolley advertising signs. This one showcases Carnation, one of the first sponsors in Disneyland and operator of not only the Carnation Cafe but also Carnation Gardens for many years.

With Denver receiving the first big snow of the season, I am reminded of Santa's Village in Lake Arrowhead, California. First image sequentially is of the North Pole. I am glad that the North Pole theme park in Colorado still has a similar North Pole.

Next up is one of my favorite Christmas themed rides is the ornament ride where you get to be an ornament on a Christmas tree.

Final image for today is a nice group shot of the Bumbleebee Monorail and Christmas Tree Ornament ride.

Leda, Terry and Jean in Disneyland July 1971

Scotty and April Visit Frontierland 1965

Scotty and April visited Disneyland in August of 1965 and must have enjoyed Frontierland as that is the only place they photographed. First up is an image of one of the Disneyland Indian dancers.

Next up a nice portrait of April hanging out with the Chief.

Final image is dad and daughter hanging out in the park in front of the Frontierland Railroad station. I like the train in station. It appears the berm has been raised as there are more stairs up to the train station today.

Knotts Berry Farm Part 4

Four images today to finish this series of photographs. First up a nice view of Boot Hill cemetery with Ghost Town in the background. Nice view of the barrel house.

A nice view of the bottle house and two very pretty Knott's Cast members. I love the themed dresses.

The wagon circle stage with a band/chorus on stage. The group looks like they are Up With People.

Last slide is another interior of the General Store. This slide has written on it: Uncle Al Battisti Knots Berry Farm.

Three more nice photographs of Knott's Berry Farm ghost town in 1968. I believe these pictures were taken early in the morning. First up is a view of boot hill cemetery. The grave is for a likely grizzled old prospector and his mule.

Next up is a view of the windmill and water pump. I like the advertising for Bird Cage theater on the structure.

The last image is one of my favorites. I love the framing of the street with the old bicycle as the foreground object.

Souvenir Friday- Berry Sisters Sign from Knott's Berry Farm

Continuing with my Knott's Berry Farm thems, A favorite piece of mine since Knott's park signage is rare to see outside of the park. I believe this two sided sign hung outside the Calico Saloon enticing folks to enter the saloon to see the Berry Sisters who made the 20's Roar Again. The lettering on this sign is nice and may have been done by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth when he was working at Knotts.

More views of Ghost Town at Knott's Berry Farm. First up a view of the two dance hall dancers sitting nicely with a visitors. I like where his hand is at....they must be close friends. I also like the Ghost Town, Calif. sign behind the statues.

Next view is of the Butterfield Stage after being washed.

Final view is on the streets of Ghost Town. I love the detail of all the signs and different shops and exhibits.

World's Fair Wednesdays are also going on hiatus for a little while as I collect more images for the series. For those fans of Knott's Berry Farm, I have a nice group of slides from 1968. First up is the crowd shot in Ghost Town. Check out some of the shops in the background, the Crow Shop, Ice Cream and of course the Calico Saloon. I wonder what they are watching?

This is what the crowd is watching, the gun fight. The two train engineers appear to be having fun.

Final image is a nice interior shot of the General Store selling my favorite candy as a kid.

Damaged Frontierland Images 1962

Every once in a while I wind up with some very damaged slides...and these three fall into the damaged slide category. The images are not in focus and have scratches. But I kind of like the very old and dream quality to the images. First up is an image on one of the Tom Sawyer raft heading towards the island.

Next up are two images of the Indian dancers in Indian Village. The crowd is very entranced by the dancers.
